Pastor’s Letter – August 11

Pastor’s Letter – August 11

Hello church,

How would you answer if a friend asked you “What is so good about the good news of Jesus?” There is simply so much that is good about the gospel that I’m sure each of us might respond with a slightly different emphasis. However, as I’ve been preparing the funeral service for Lynne Biedron, it has struck me that of all the blessings of the gospel perhaps one that is least discussed yet most sweet is the reality that we need not fear death. This was so evident in Lynne in her last days and I think it shaped the way she lived all of life. We will open Lynne’s service of thanksgiving with this promise from Jesus: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” We will close with this assurance from 1 Peter: “In his great mercy [God] has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” That is such good news!

Our society doesn’t really know how to deal with death, so I wonder how the conversation would go: “What is so good about the good news of Jesus?” “Well, alongside so many other good things, I don’t fear death.” I think we tend to forget the beauty of this, and how profoundly good this good news is!

Please join us for Lynne’s funeral: Tuesday 13th at 1pm, Trinity Church Adelaide, 88 North Terrace Adelaide. Parking is behind the church, accessed via the Morphet Street slip-lane from North Terrace.

We’re running Taste and See on Monday evenings in September. Bring your friends and neighbours along to learn more of the goodness of the gospel. RSVP here.

And if you’d enjoy some hang-out time with your church family, come for a walk at Belair on Sunday 18th. It’s also a really easy way to introduce your friends to your church in a relaxed social setting, so feel free to bring them along too. Info here.

See you on Sunday,

Simon
