Pastor’s Letter – December 31

Pastor’s Letter – December 31

G’day church,

This Sunday we return to our usual time of 10:00am as we jump back into Mark’s gospel at the end of chapter 8. This will be a great lead into the New Year, because Jesus asks us the perfect question to set the agenda for the coming year: “What about you? Who do you say I am?”

As we’ll see over the coming weeks, Jesus shows us what it means to know him and follow him. And it’s a bold path to take! “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” There’s nothing half-hearted about this. It’s all in. And there’s nothing trivial about it either. This isn’t just a New Year’s resolution to go for that promotion at work, or lose those extra kilos that have been hanging around since eating too much Christmas pudding (last year). This is the stuff of eternity and life and death and security and purpose. It’s all too easy to drift from one year into the next without reflecting on the call of discipleship. But Jesus invites us to count the cost and step forward boldly on the great adventure of radical discipleship and a cross-shaped life. I’m looking forward to being spurred on in that together.

See you on Sunday,

Simon
